23 -- YATES LIONS
Yates will be in pursuit of their 20th consecutive playoff appearance this winter, on the heels of going 20-11 and reaching the Regional Quarterfinals a year ago.
That goal should be well within their reach, even though they’re expected to contend with Booker T. Washington, MLCPAYM, and Wheatley for district supremacy on an annual basis.
Fortunately for coach Greg Wise and company, the Lions have the luxury of bringing back four starters from their 2023 roster, beginning with Jordan Andrus (Sr. PF), who’s committed to Rice for football.
He’s joined on the court by Aiden Mohammed (Jr. SF), Calvin Murphy (Sr. G) and Joshua “JD” Wallace (Jr. F).
After being knocked out of the postseason by rival Washington, this season’s mantra will be, “win at any cost”, according to Wise.

24 -- PEARLAND OILERS
Despite competing in one of the city’s toughest districts, featuring the likes of Shadow Creek and Dawson, Pearland managed to go 20-15 and claim one of the coveted playoff spots last winter.
They’re definitely on the come-up, which should leave fans feeling optimistic heading into the new year.
Coach Delrick Brown’s culture is finally beginning to cement in his second year with the program, and the talent coming back should see the Oilers continuing to improve.
First-team, all-district honoree Devan Brown (Jr.) is a valuable asset at the guard position, who can stretch the court for the offense.
Senior center Ezenna Ibe provides some physicality for which he was given a second-team nomination.
Other key names to remember in 2024-25 will be Ryan Spears (Sr. PG), Byron Bibbs (Jr. F) and Avin Glover (Jr. C).
