The Lamar Texans are riding on a fast train and don't plan on getting off anytime soon. Since starting their season with a 40-14 loss to the Woodlands, a Texas high school football powerhouse, they have gone on a four game win streak and have outscored their opponents 179-19. With only two games left on their schedule their chances of winning District 18-6A again look high, and they're definitely picking up momentum heading into the playoffs.
Beginning in 2015, Lamar's football team reached the 6A Regional Finals three years in a row. They have followed that streak, however, by falling in the first round to teams from a tough Cypress district for the past two years. With the numerous weapons that the Texans posses on both offense and defense this year, the possibility of making it back to the third round of the UIL Playoffs is highly favorable.
The mind behind this talented Houston team is head coach Michael Lindsey. He runs an electrifying offense that has thrown and rushed for over 800 and 700 yards respectively. Starting junior quarterback and pitcher Winston Smith leads the Texans offense with an impressive 61% completion percentage and six touchdown passes on the season.
As for the ground game, junior Kenneth Kennedy and sophomore Kelton Weathers have racked up a combined 249 yards and seven touchdowns. Lamar's ability to continue outscoring its opponents by large amounts will depend on how well Kennedy and Weathers can utilize their talents in getting first downs and finding the end zone.
Lamar will finish off their regular season against two teams, Westside and Heights, who they have high hopes of defeating. Heading into Saturday afternoon's matchup, Westside will have only played three games this season. For Lamar, using experience to their advantage will be key to the team's success. As for Heights, Lamar will be facing a team that is sitting right under them at the top of the current District 18-6A standings. Staying the course and maintaining their fire will play a major role in how they will perform in that game and head into the playoffs.
Throughout the past decade, the Texans have always dominated their district, but have fallen short many times in reaching the Quarterfinals. However, getting over that wall is now very much in their sight.
