The private school volleyball season is officially a wrap.
This past weekend, SPC crowned its champion - Episcopal for the second time in the past three seasons - and TAPPS crowned their champs with St. Agnes rolling through the best of the best to win it all.
VYPE has compiled its final private school volleyball rankings for the year. Check out who finished No. 1!
1) St. Agnes Academy Tigers (TAPPS 6A State Champions) What a run by St. Agnes. First, to even get to the title match, the Tigers had to win a pair of five-set thrillers against Antonian College Prep and Concordia Lutheran. Winning a five-set match isn't easy. Once in the title game against Prestonwood Christian Academy, the Tigers found themselves down 2-0. St. Agnes had to win the next three sets to win a state championship. This is the same as the Boston Red Sox being down 3-1 to the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS. Their backs were against the wall. The Tigers clawed their way back to win the third and fourth set to eventually win the fifth set and the first TAPPS state championship for the program since 2005. The Tigers were led by a solid crew of seniors including Rice-commit Sahara Maruska.
▲ 2) Episcopal Knights (SPC Champions) For the second time in three years, Episcopal is the queens of SPC. Led by the ultra-talented Texas A&M-commit duo of Bria and Cimone Woodard, who led the team in kills with 242 and 126 blocks, respectively, the Knights were able to pull off the victory in the end. Trinity Watts finished the year second on the team with 234 kills and 371 digs, while Brennan Howell had 229 kills. Alison Krieg had a team-leading 495 digs, while Camille Hanna had 649 assists. Episcopal swept every opponent in the playoffs, beating Houston Christian, St. John's and then Episcopal School of Dallas. This team will definitely be a contender next year with the Woodard sister coming back for their senior campaign.
▲ 3) Concordia Lutheran Crusaders (TAPPS 6A State Semifinalists) A year after falling short in the TAPPS 6A state championship match, Concordia Lutheran found itself back in the TAPPS Final Four. The Crusaders fell short to eventual state champion St. Agnes in a five-set thriller. Concordia Lutheran finishes the year at 36-8 overall.
▲ 4) Rosehill Christian Eagles (TAPPS 3A State Semifinalist) Rosehill Christian had a historic year. The Eagles won their district title going undefeated for the first time in school history. Then Rosehill Christian went on to beat Sacred Heart - Halletsville and Keystone - San Antonio to advance to the TAPPS Final Four. What a run by Rosehill Christian.
▲ 5) The John Cooper School (SPC Semifinals) The John Cooper School was one win away from playing for a SPC title. The Dragons defeated Hockaday School, 3-1, and then fell short to Episcopal School of Dallas in the semifinal match. It was a great season for the Dragons, going 31-5-2 overall.
