Zachary High track star Sean Burrell overcomes injuries to win Louisiana Gatorade boys track award
Along with being a track sprinter/hurdler and a football player, Zachary High's Sean Burrell also is an avid fisherman. So it was appropriate for the Bronco senior-to-be to find out that he landed a different kind of "big one" on the way home from a fishing trip.
The Gatorade Company announced that Burrell was selected as the 2018-19 Gatorade Louisiana Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year on Monday morning. It is an honor that follows an injury-laden season that ended with a blaze of glory.
"This wasn't something I was sure I could get," Burrell said. "All through the spring I was had to be patient and let my body heal. At the end, I was comfortable opening up to run faster. Winning this award ... it's great."
Burrell posted nationally-ranked times in the 200 and 400 meters while leading the Broncos to a Class 5A runner-up finish at the AllState Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Outdoor Track Championships in May. He won the 200 meters in 20.79 seconds, a time which ranked sixth nationally, not long after winning the 400 in 46.52 seconds, the No. 7 national mark. Burrell, who also finished second in the 110 hurdles, gives Baton Rouge a sweep of Gatorade honors this spring. Baton Rouge High's Logan Lewis, a throws specialist, won the Gatorade Louisiana girls award.
