Returning to a new season as the reigning district champion is always a great feeling no matter what sport you play. For the Richland Royals basketball team, they have used their district championship status as a reason to continue playing strong this season as they go on the hunt for another district title and possibly more! VYPEDFW takes a look at the Royals' season so far and what fans can expect from them headed into the rest of their season:
Last season, the Royals posted a 12-2 district record to claim the district title. On the season, the team recorded a 22-8 record with a 73% winning percentage. The Royals were able to record big victories over the likes of Denton Ryan, Denton, Colleyville Heritage, Grapevine, Justin Northwest, and more en route to playoffs. During the playoffs, Richland fell to Mansfield Legacy in the second round to end their season.
This season, the Royals have been playing as fast-paced and as strong as ever. The team started strong against Mesquite and has continued to show their usual dominance on the court against the likes of Arlington Martin, school district rival Birdville, Lubbock and more. Richland currently has a perfect 2-0 district record with victories over Justin Northwest and Colleyville Heritage. They look to continue their dominance on Friday with a matchup against Birdville!
Fans can expect the same usual strength out of Richland for the rest of the season. With an offense that is fast-paced and ready to score at any given opportunity, the Royals stay on top of their game. The offense is accompanied by a defense that figures out the other team quickly. So far this season, the Royals defense has held their opponents to a combined 854 points. Expect the team to make a strong playoff push and use their early exit last season as motivation to continue fighting for a chance at an appearance in the state tournament.
