Welcome back to another ATX/SATX edition of Team of the Week. Each week we take a look at a team from across the San Antonio/Austin area and surrounding areas that impressed us for one reason or another.
This weeks team of the week is the O'Connor Volleyball team. O'Connor is currently 35-4 on the season and had wins over Jay (3-0) and Harlan (3-2) last week and sit at 10-0 in district play and look like one of the teams to beat not only in San Antonio but the state. Through the 10 district games the Panthers have only dropped 3 sets and haven't lost a match since August 27th.
Leading the way for the Panthers include Jenna Garza who has 47 aces on the season and averages .5 aces a set and sits at 586 assists on the year. Nevaeh Smith currently has a .319 hitting percentage on the year with 62 blocks and Carly Chavez sits at 643 digs on the season averaging 6.4 digs per set.
In what was their closest game since that August 27th loss, the Panthers came out with a 3-2 win over Harlan. In the match Kelli Fording recorded 27 kills, 3 aces and 12 digs, while Laney Blake (23) and Jenna Garza (33) led the way on assists for the Panthers.
Then just yesterday they increased their district lead by defeating Taft 3-0 with Anabella Guevara (15), Kelli Fording (10) and Hannah Solomon (9) leading the team in kills and Carly Chavez leading the way in digs with 31.
During that time Coach Garcia also surpassed 800 career wins. With 5 games left on the season, O'Connor looks to go undefeated in district before making a deep playoff run.
The Panthers take on Brennan this Saturday.
