VYPE DFW: TXHSFB Top 5 Games to Watch Week 6

Just like that week six of Texas High School Football is upon us. We have already seen some of the greatest highs and lowest lows so far this season. VYPEDFW has some of the area's top games that you are not going to want to miss this week!

Rockwall (3-2) vs. Mesquite (3-2)

Rockwall vs. Mesquite -- Friday, October 1 at 7 p.m.

Rockwall Yellowjackets

The Rockwall Yellowjackets have been a strong force in the DFW area when it comes to high school football this season. Behind quarterback Braedyn Locke, the Yellowjackets have posted a 3-2 start to the season. Their first loss came in week 4 against a usual state championship contender Highland Park while their second loss came last week against a strong Rockwall-Heath team in what was arguably one of the best (if not the best ) DFW area games in high school football history.

Locke has thrown for nearly 1,600 yards in five games with 14 touchdowns and a 65% pass completion rating. Zach Hernandez has rushed for nearly 1,000 yards with eight touchdowns on 143 carries. Noble Johnson has caught 27 passes for 500 yards and six touchdowns while Caden Marshall has caught four touchdown passes for 512 yards. Not to be overlooked is Aiden Meeks (251 yards, 4 touchdowns) and Brennan Ray (296 yards, six touchdowns) who have both been strong forces this season for the Yellowjackets.

Mesquite Skeeters

The Skeeters opened the season with two losses. Week one's 30-14 loss against Flower Mound was followed by a 28-10 week two loss to South Grand Prairie. Every week since week two, though, Mesquite has focused all of their efforts into turning a new leaf and showing the strength on the field as they have defeated the likes of Grand Prairie, Arlington, and Skyline. Rockwall, though, just might be their toughest opponent so far this season.

Just as Rockwall has their not-so-secret weapons, Mesquite has their own in Jamarion Woods who has accounted for four touchdowns with 243 receiving yards on 15 catches. Not far behind him is Gervin McCarthy who has tallied 205 receiving yards and one touchdown on 12 catches. In the pocket making those throws is Chance Edwards who has a 60% pass completion rating with 649 passing yards and six passing touchdowns in five games. Anthony Roberts shouldn't be overlooked as the team's lead rusher with 348 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 70 carries.

What To Expect:

Both teams have a lot to lose here. On one hand, Rockwall wants to prove that their strong start wasn't a flike. On the other hand, Mesquite wants to prove that they should not be slept on this season. Can a two loss streak be enough to cause too much pressure on the shoulders of Locke? Will Mesquite have enough fight in them coming on a three game win streak high? Fans can expect nothing short of a physical game on Friday night that ultimately comes down to defense and communication.

Denton Guyer (5-0) vs. Prosper (3-2)

Neena Sidhu (VYPEU - VYPE Media)

Denton Guyer vs. Prosper -- Friday, October 1 at 7 pm

Denton Guyer Wildcats

Denton Guyer has had an incredible season so far with statement wins over the likes of in-town rival and defending state champion Denton Ryan as well as Humble Atascocita. With a 5-0 start to the season, Guyer is looking at week six football as a regular business trip.

Guyer is led by Jackson Arnold who has completed 60% of his passes through five games. With 11 touchdowns and over 1,150 passing yards, Arnold isn't looking to slow down anytime soon. Arnold also serves as the team's lead rusher with three rushing touchdowns and 181 rushing yards on 47 keeps. Other players to watch for the Wildcats include Byron Phillips who has five rushing touchdowns to his name with 173 rushing yards on 48 carries. Fans can also expect a big game out of Grayson O'Bara who has accounted for three receiving touchdowns and 411 receiving yards.

Prosper Eagles

Prosper is looking to make an even bigger name for themselves this season. Starting with a 3-2 record, the Eagles have posted great wins over South Grand Prairie, Mansfield Lake Ridge, and Arlington Lamar. Their two losses have come against an extremely strong Southlake Carroll and a three-point game last week against Little Elm.

The Eagles have a strong quarterback in Harrison Rosar who has thrown for nearly 1,070 yards this season with 11 touchdowns. On the keep, Rosar has tallied four touchdowns on 123 rushing yards. Malik Dailey has accounted for three rushing touchdowns while leading the Eagles in rushing with 318 yards on 62 carries. Strong forces on the receiving end that Guyer's defense will have to keep an eye on is Tyler Bailey (433 receiving yards, 5 touchdowns) and Houston Hawkins (363, 4 touchdowns) who have both been explosive for Prosper this season.

What To Expect?:

The big question is whether or not Prosper has what it takes to take down Denton Guyer. Guyer has proven to be on a straight and narrow path towards a deep playoff run without ever looking back at any of their opponents. Prosper's loss last week against Little Elm might give them enough push to put up a good fight against Guyer, but ultimately, fans can expect to see Guyer go 6-0 this week in what will surely be a close game.

McKinney Boyd (5-0) vs. Allen (3-1)

McKinney Boyd vs. Allen -- Friday, October 1 at 7 pm

McKinney Boyd Broncos

For the first time in school history, the Broncos have started 3-0... then 4-0... then 5-0. Could the Broncos be VYPE Houston's own Scotty T's Team of Destiny this season? A week four win on a blocked PAT returned for a touchdown over Byron Nelson was followed by an overtime 37-34 thriller over Denton Braswell in week five. Does McKinney Boyd have what it takes to keep this fight alive?

The Boncos are led by none other than junior quarterback Ryan Shackleton who has thrown for 1,028 passing yards for 12 touchdowns, completing 67% of his passes. Shackleton has also accounted for two rushing touchdowns. Rushing for the Broncos, McKinney Boyd has Carter Whitefiled who has tallied 419 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 89 carries. Receiving for the Broncos is Caden Park who has over 425 yards and seven touchdowns on 27 catches. Not to be overlooked is Peyton Shaw who has brought in 19 catches of his own for 240 yards and four touchdowns.

Allen Eagles

Are the Allen Eagles back on the rise after losing to Atascocita at home earlier this season? It seems to be so. The Eagles have not let that loss define who they are. Allen is headed into the week 6 matchup after a BYE week that might have been just enough time to prepare for an incredibly strong McKinney Boyd squad.

Allen has Mike Hawkins in the pocket who has thrown for 859 yards and six touchdowns, but the strongest threat going up against McKinney Boyd is Jaylen Jenkins who has accounted for eight rushing touchdowns with 577 rushing yards on 55 carries this season. Allen is here to show just why they are five-time state champions and will be looking to shut down McKinney Boyd on Friday.

What To Expect:

McKinney Boyd is running on this school-record high of five straight wins to start the season. Can the trhill be enough to take down a powerhouse like Allen? It's possible. If the stars align just right- and they might since the Broncos are facing Allen in McKinney- the Broncos could pull off a huge upset win over the Allen Eagles.

Mesquite Poteet (4-2) vs. South Oak Cliff (3-1)

Mesquite Poteet vs. South Oak Cliff -- Friday, October 1 at 7:30 pm

Mesquite Poteet Pirates

Mesquite Poteet is off to a strong start this season. Despite losing two games, the Pirates have averaged around 41 points a game. Last week, Mesquite Poteet posted a great 35-28 win over Hillcrest. Led by quarterback Nicholas Aguilar, the Pirates look to extend their win streak to two on Friday night.

Aguilar has thrown for nearly 500 yards this season with three passing touchdowns, but a pivotal force for the Pirates this season has been Joey Shaw who has rushed for 629 yards and seven touchdowns on 81 carries. The Pirates are going to have to see cohesiveness from their offense in Friday night's game if they want to shut down South Oak Cliff.

South Oak Cliff Bears

South Oak Cliff's only loss this season has come in their opening game against Duncanville. With a strong offense and an even stronger defense, the Bears will look to continuing to take down opponents this Friday as they look towards Poteet.

Lead by Kevin Henry-Jennings, the Bears have a strong offense. Henry-Jennings has thrown 12 touchdowns on 723 passing yards completing 63% of his passes. The strength of the offense doesn't stop with the quarterback, though. KeAndra Hollywood has accumulated 233 rushing yards with one touchdown while Qualon Farrar has scored two rushing touchdowns on 182 yards. The true threat, however, is Randy Reece who has tallied six receiving touchdowns for 394 yards on 18 catches.

What To Expect:

South Oak Cliff hasn't lost a district game since 2014 and there's no doubt that Mesquite Poteet wants to change that for them. However, the Bears can be expected to pull ahead and continue their streak on Friday night.

Melissa (3-2) vs. Argyle (4-0)

Melissa vs. Argyle -- Friday, October 1 at 7:30 pm

Melissa Cardinals

Melissa's two losses this season have come against strong teams- Celina and Frisco Memorial. Despite their losses, the Cardinals have outscored their opponents 203-137 so far this season. Melissa is looking to put a strong game up against the VYPE DFW 1A-4A No. 1 ranked Argyle on Friday.

Melissa quarterback, Sam Fennegan, has thrown for 1,282 yards and 16 touchdowns. Fennegan has also accounted for two rushing touchdowns on 148 rushing yards. Leading in rushing for the Cardinals is Ashton Mitchell-Johnson who has accounted for six rushing touchdowns on 591 rushing yards and 97 carries.

Argyle Eagle

The Eagles are coming into this matchup on a strong win streak. Not only are they 4-0 on the season, but they haven't lost a game in 20-straight games. Last season, they went 16-0 for a state title and shouldn't be expected to slow down just yet.

While Zach Ohlemeier and Jacob Robinson lead the charge in the pocket for the Eagles with a combined 704 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, Landon Farris has been hot on the ground for Argyle. Farris has accounted for 259 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns while also scoring one receiving touchdown. Leading in receiving for the Eagles is Ward McCollum with 200 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 11 catches.

What To Expect:

The Eagles are a tough team to slow down. Though Melissa is incredibly tough and will put up a tough fight against the reigning state champions, Argyle likely won't slip up this week and will escape unscathed.
